Job interview

When you have just opened your transport company and you are starting to develop well, a difficult choice presents itself to you:

Interview for a Driver or Go Solo

This step can be mysterious, worrying and stressful and completely understandable. An employee also means additional expenses to take out each month with paid leave, customers to always satisfy and a truck to make available.

With this observation, we must avoid making a mistake as much as possible in choosing our driver;
for this I will give you different advice, to have the maximum chance of recruiting a good driver during the job interview:

1- Choose a smiling driver who takes care of himself and…his car

During the first interview: the smile and the outfit are easily observable and reveal a lot about the candidate’s personality type.

As for the vehicle, walk him back to his vehicle at the end of the interview and it’s fixed at a glance. If a driver doesn’t take care of his own vehicles, there’s less chance he’ll be delicate with your company’s.

For information, customers have their criteria for their choice of subcontractors and rental craftsmen   who represent their image to their customers.

2- Morning punctuality

Giving an interview appointment at 8:30 a.m. is already a lot of sorting between the motivated and the non-punctual…
Hiring a driver and then regularly apologizing to customers for being late no thanks

3- Ask for a CV and a handwritten cover letter

From the web and classified ads, it often happens that you are selected for an interview just after a phone call or a recommendation from a friend.
A CV allows you to analyze your various experiences as well as a handwritten letter to see your writing… which will also be used to fill out future delivery notes.

4- Driving license B

Do not hesitate to ask to see your license and ask questions about your driving history: number of points?
license already revoked?
experience of long journeys, accidents, etc.

5- His availability and his desires

Ask if he or she is a morning person, willing to work at night or early in the morning! Ask if he or she has any demands or imperatives regarding the schedule (children to manage for example) and if he or she is willing to work overtime.

For example, if you do express delivery, then it is better to take drivers who are fairly flexible in terms of hours.

Job interview

in summary:

We manage to do a little sorting during the job interview with these few criteria, however despite this it happened to me to hire people who were not necessarily « super drivers » and became so after a few months but also conversely to have, after a few months, some big surprises…
